The gemstone Tourmaline is the official birthstone for October as adopted by the American National Association of Jewellers in 1912, the stone for the Zodiac sign of Leo, and the accepted gem for the 8th wedding anniversary.
The name Tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese (Sri Lanka) word “tura mali” which translates as the stone of mixed colours. Tourmaline is available in a wide variety of colours from black to bluish-black, dark brown, yellow, medium brown, blue to neon blue, lime to dark forest green, red and reddish purple, yellow, pink, and colourless.
Ancient legend says that tourmaline is found in all colours because it travelled along a rainbow and gathered all the rainbow’s colours.
Tourmaline is believed to strengthen the body and spirit, especially the nervous system, blood, and lymph glands. It is also thought to inspire creativity and was used extensively as a talisman by artists and writers.
Scientifically, tourmaline is not a single mineral, but a group of minerals. Tourmaline exhibits the interesting electrical properties of pyroelectricity and piezoelectricity. When heated or rubbed, it attracts dust and dirt particles. This is caused by its atomic structure, which causes it to generate an electrical charge when heated or rubbed.
Multicoloured stones are truly a gemmological wonder, as their beauty and uniqueness are unparalleled. An interesting form of multicoloured tourmaline is watermelon tourmaline which is green on the outside and pink on the inside.
The watermelon tourmaline is a rare variety that displays three different colours in the same crystal – green (the skin of the watermelon), pink (the sweet fruit) and white (the rind). This is a rare occurrence in nature.

Crystals and Angels
Watermelon Tourmaline is associated with Metatron, the Angel of Sacred Geometry and Numerology. He helps to clear and open our chakras, cleansing psychic toxins from our bodies. He works with sensitive children, indigos and crystals and helps to organize schedules, making time for activities which are close to our heart.
Crystals and Chakras
Watermelon Tourmaline easily connects with the Heart Chakra which is the seat of unconditional love. Unconditional Love is a creative and powerful energy that can help us through the most challenging times. The heart stands at the centre of all energies and unifies our being as a whole. A discord or imbalance in the heart chakra will adversely affect all the other centres.
It is important that we keep our hearts open and replace judgments with acceptance. When we are open to giving and receiving love, a healing occurs inside us as well as in our relationships.
When the heart chakra is out of balance you may feel sorry for yourself, indecisive, afraid of letting go, afraid of getting hurt, or unworthy of love. When the heart chakra is balanced you will feel compassionate, friendly, empathetic, desire to nurture others and see the good in everyone.
Watermelon Tourmaline opens the creative elements of the heart, opening us to love, bringing in what is best for us and heals the heart chakra on very deeper levels.
